I've loved deer ever since I was little.
Every fall, I'd sit with my dad and grandpa watching hunting shows on TV. We'd look at trail camera pictures together, and I'd ask a hundred questions about bucks, rubs, scrapes, and why deer did the things they did. I couldn't wait for the day I'd get to go on my own real deer hunt.
When my parents told me I had been invited to a Miracle Hunt at Whitetail Miracles, I was so excited I could hardly sleep the night before. I packed and repacked my bag.As soon as we pulled into the ranch, I knew this was going to be different.
Everyone welcomed us like we were family.
The guides shook my hand, asked me about school, baseball, and fishing, and wanted to hear all about the biggest buck I'd ever seen on a trail camera. They made me feel important, even though I was just a kid.
We sat down for lunch together, and one of the staff members shared the story behind Whitetail Miracles. We talked about faith, family, and respecting God's creation. Before heading out, we prayed together and thanked God for the opportunity to spend the afternoon in the woods.
Then it was finally time.
My guide showed me where we'd be hunting and explained everything we'd be doing. He talked about safety, identifying deer, waiting for the right opportunity, and always making ethical decisions.
I wasn't just learning how to hunt. I was learning how to become a responsible hunter.
As we settled into the blind, everything became quiet. We watched squirrels chase each other through the trees. Turkeys wandered across the field. A family of does fed peacefully nearby.
My guide pointed out tracks, rubs, and fresh scrapes, teaching me things I'd only read about before. I didn't realize how much there was to learn. Hours seemed to pass in just a few minutes.
Then suddenly, my guide whispered, "There's a buck."
I slowly looked in the direction he pointed. Walking through the trees was one of the most beautiful whitetails I had ever seen. My heart was pounding so hard I thought the deer could hear it. The guide smiled and whispered, "Take a deep breath. There's no hurry." When the buck stepped into the open, everything we'd practiced came together.
I'll never forget those words. As we walked together to the deer, he reminded me to be thankful for the animal and for the opportunity God had given us to experience His creation. We paused for a moment of gratitude before taking pictures.
The guides showed me how they respectfully field dressed the deer and explained how the meat would help feed our family. They talked about conservation, responsibility, and why ethical hunters care deeply about wildlife and the future of hunting. That was one of my favorite parts of the whole day.
I didn't just go hunting. I learned why hunting matters. On the drive home, I couldn't stop talking. I told my parents about everything I'd learned, every deer we'd seen, every story my guide had shared, and how much fun I'd had. When I got home, I hung my Whitetail Miracles hat in my bedroom.
Every time I look at it, I remember much more than my first deer. I remember the people. I remember the laughter. I remember sitting quietly in God's creation. Most of all, I remember feeling like I had become part of something bigger than myself.
I'll never forget those words. As we walked together to the deer, he reminded me to be thankful for the animal and for the opportunity God had given us to experience His creation. We paused for a moment of gratitude before taking pictures.
That lesson will stay with me for the rest of my life.
